Building Momentum and Anime Style

Mon May 18, 2009, 4:44 AM

Still doing assignments
STILL one of the best tracks ever ---> [link]

Ok, first up: epic thanks to those who responded to the survey in the last journal. It's hugely appreciated. Will let you know what happens with it, possibly in the form of another Design Persona next semester.

Ugh, not really getting anywhere on this Design and Research thing, but want it out of my hair by tonight... *insert mumbling here - stupid little three-thousand word such and such getting in the way of more pressing matters...*

Anyway, stuff happening in my life: not much.

Met up with :iconaikurisu: on sunday which was cool. He was down from up the coast for Macross Con (mate, I know you're reading this: pics). Annoyingly I was working the day that was on and so couldn't go. However we did manage to catch up over breakfast and discuss all things anime, complain about the politicians and generally piss-fart around... all the good stuff.

Also had to buy a new car battery for the Alfetta. I think it's been going for awhile, but the cold mornings have killed it. After failing to roll-start and needing to get a jump form the neighbours one morning, I bit the bullet and shelled out my $150 for a new one. I've yet to have to do a cold morning start though, so... fingers crossed. EDIT Yay! It works! Pity the alternator's not big enough to run lights, wipers, indicators and fans at the same time though... END EDIT

On The Anime Style

So, I tried throwing a few illustrations up on Dannychoo.com for feedback... more out of interests sake than anything. One of the comments I got back was that it "didn't look like anime", which oddly made me quite happy =P I figure that if I'm getting responses like that back then I must be doing something right in developing my own style... even if I've no idea what it is or how I got there.

Now I still think I draw in an anime/manga style, but it got me thinking: what is the "anime style"... to you? Because to be totally honest I'm not really sure anymore. I know I'll recognise something as "anime/manga", but honestly couldn't put it into words.

Anyway, I'm going to make another plunger of coffee and try and build up some momentum on this Design and Research report.

Ciao

Well, to be perfectly honest with you, I can't tell Anime from Manga from Hentai from a large smooth rock. It's all cartooning to me and I enjoy watching, looking, experiencing them all.

"I'm not going to watch that because it's not ( fill in your favorite style of illustrating here )."

That's just short changing yourself.

Get that essay thing done and then you can go out and play! :-)

Bring us good news on your essay, bud. :) It was fun answering that.

for the most part big eyes (or at least more stylised in that the brow ridge and socket aren't as clearly defined) and pointy noses or at least noses that again are drawn in a minamlist style. I suppose another key feature of mainstream anime is the use of bright saturated colours. Having gone to this 'Dannychoo' it does appear that these generalisations hold up as on the front page I am greeted by anime figures all looking like they have come out of the more kid friendly shows like Naruto and Bleach. Whereas Anime/Manga can take on a more 'hardboiled' style such as can be found in Cowboy bebop and Ghost in the shell. Your work still has elements in it that make it anime though you have taken these elements and created a style that is wholly your own. I wonder how old your commenter was?
:iconyuuki-kazu:
$150!? That's quite a number there.

I'd rather say yours is kinda like a hybrid, in which is made of originality :)
I kinda envy you for having the guts to post your pieces there.

I could put it into words... But I'd have to write a gigantic essay.

As for your style, I'd say it's definitely inspired by anime, but you've definitely put your own spin on it to make it distinctive and original.

I don't know about you, but I find categorizing styles to be very annoying. I'll go into something a little different here. Like if I drew a lineart of a mech just by itself without any characters or anything in the drawing. Well then, what category does that go into? It'd be impossible to tell if it would fit into a manga universe or a more "western" styled one, since no characters are present in the image. This bothers the hell out of me.

Maybe I'm just pissed off at dA's stupid categorization system.

:iconphitus:
I also try to not making my stuff too anime.

All animes are different, but I guess if you want me to the style with the "super anime" characteristics, it would be a simplified face, but large shiny eyes, hair that appears to be in one shiny piece (most likely some unnatural color), elongated limbs, large heads, hands and feet.

Sometimes the style looks ok at some level, but when it's closer to "super anime" it gets a little ridiculous.

Well, I'm about 7500 words into 20k for the survey essay... just needed to get this little one out of the way first :P

Cheers much for filling that thing out by the way :ahoy:

i think it's a combination of the unique approach to facial proportions combined with a pop style cel colouring technique.

'Maurice' was pretty good. About to start on 'Wee Free Men'. Missing the more adult leveled humor of the others, though. :)
