All Your Lamps...

Fri Mar 13, 2009, 8:34 PM

...are belong to us!

Ok guys I, yet again, need your help for a uni assignment... basically I need pictures of your lamps and light fixtures, particularly any you're using for purposes other than lighting stuff. I swear, it's not some weired fetish. ^^;

Basically for this semester I'm researching alternative uses of products, in particular lamps and lighting. For example: I have a halogen desk lamp, as featured in: [link] (the white one on the right). It light stuff, but I also use it to lean stuff against, hang things from, heat and thin epoxy resins, dry paint, weigh down models whilst they dry... all manner of alternative uses.

Another example of alternative use carries on from our research last semester into urban history and the use of public artifacts as impromptue signboards though street and sticker art. Again, alternative use.

So yeah, please, if you can spare 10 minutes take a photo of your lamp and tell me (or show it in the picture) anything you use it for other than lighting... and hell, different lighting uses would be cool too. If you don't want to throw the pic up on the interbotz note me and I'll give you an email address to send it too.

Sorry to impose on you guys again. Usual uni related disclaimer: I'll not use your names in anything I write or that will be publicly distributed. If I need to use photos in the end report (all 30'000 words of it, ugh) I'll ask you first.

In return I give you Paprika Balkanicus [link] who played support for The Cat Empire last night.

Cheers,

Wraith 11

Man, that's awesome! I never thought of that one. You couldn't possibly take a photo of that by any chance? Please? *puppy dog eyes*

Thing is I need to be able to "observe" people doing this stuff, but since lamps are generally used in people's homes that's hard for me to do. So yeah, I'm kinda limited to getting photos from people ^^;

Unless it was an LED lamp of course, in which case it just wouldn't be hot at all =P

As already discussed my lamp is the second most used item in my room, and during semester it it is the most used (previously coming second to my bed, which as it seems is used rarely during semester)
Over its life i have used it for:
light, paper weight, rubber band holder, bulldog clip holder, heater in winter, hand warmer in winter, it currently offers a place to hold my eraser. I have a makeshift light box which it provides the light source for, i often use it for shadow/light studies for drawing, there are unlimited applications in which i have used it for to produce various lighting effects for images in presentation boards, drying paint, drying glue, i think on more than one occasion i have used the base to draw an ellipse, i have definitely used the glass lamp cover to draw a circle and i dissembled part of it to base some of my electrical component decisions for a design i was working on at the time (thats ones probably getting a bit specific)...hmm thats all i can think of at the moment. i will bring a few images in on wednesday for ya
:iconwraith11:
That'd be awesome. No, far from "nothing special", it's exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for. Every-day alternative uses are exactly what I need to be able to design for :D

Nope. They're having to bring it in from another library for me. I'm on Feet of Clay atm. And Wee Free Men, though a younger reader, was friggin hilarious! Nac Mac Feegle rock. =D

'Maurice' was pretty good. About to start on 'Wee Free Men'. Missing the more adult leveled humor of the others, though. :)
