A bit of Jesse

Umm, I actualy did write out a big character sheet for Jesse, but it's 1800 words long (and climbing).... I'm sure none of you feel like reading that much of my crappy writing. So I'll just hit the highpoints for Jesse's updated character profile:

Age: 20
Height: 5’7”
Relationship Status: Solidly single, and in no hurry to change/
Occupation: 2nd year Industrial Design student at QUT, minors in Sustainability and Architecture. Barista at WiP in West End
Family and ethnicity: Bitsa, a little ethnic, middle class family, eldest of two, technically Anglican but mostly agnostic. Good relationship with parents and younger brother.

Jesse's one of those quiet achiver types who somehow manages to be good at everything not the best, but good. Actually she works damn hard, but always seems to just be cruising along and the fact that she is very good at what she does doesn't hurt either. Unfortunately because of this she tends to have minmal patience for people who can't keep up with her and has developed a somewhat jaded and cynical outlook on the world. That she counters by being pretty relaxed about everything, basically "The world's made up of morons, there's not much I can do about it, why get stressed." For some reason people seen to take this as her being a nice person

Jesse works casual at WiP cafe in West End, a small, boarderline hole in the wall establishment as a barista/waitress/cook/manager/damn near whatever else needs doing. Barista is a good occupation for Jess as coffee is very important WiP is a bit of a hangout for the local design/arts community and is also know for its mild Communist leanings. That suits Jesse fine as she'll happily spout Communist propoganda all day, partly because she finds it interesting, partly because she thinks it's funny but mostly because it pisses off any Conservatives in the area... which is always high up her "Things to do list". Her income from WiP is supplimented by the Youth Allowance.

A large portion of that however goes on rent for her sharehouse room in Paddington. It's a bit more expensive than other suburbs but Jesse likes it because it's resonably central, she can walk or public transport everywhere and so doesn't need a drivers' license. Because she's on a budget Jesse tends to buy quality over quantity and is also exceptionally skilled at repurposeing old or retro stuff for her own use.

Despite being in different courses Jesse hangs around with Dan, who she's known since highschool, a lot in their down time though she's also starting to spend more time with people from her own course. It's not that Jesse's anti-social, far from it. She's popular, chats easially and generally has time for most people. It's just that she's always just ever so slightly detached and tends to hold people at arms length. Friendly, but not intimate... it takes a long time for Jess to take someone into her confidence. Amy, despite "leading" her own group of friends attaches herself from time to time to Jesse as well after they met during "BEB101 - Introduction to Professional Learning"; *shudder*. Amy's far more energetic/immature than the quieter and more relaxed Jesse. Despite liking the girl, Jesse can only really deal with her in small doses, fortunately Amy's a social butterfly and easily distracted.


Other stuff

Likes: Coffee, her friends, good design, font jokes, street art, retro stuff, wacky/slightly off the wall stuff, Apple, quiet cocktail bars, good discussion, ranting, "Group meetings" (read: breakfast and coffee with people she likes, maybe some actual work), Communism (for the lulz), Wine/cocktails + cheese.

Dislikes: The world in general, people (though she does find them interesting), maths, the ill-informed, people incapable of seeing two sides of an argument, wet weather (when she has to be somewhere), computer issues, wankers, "Starchitects", spiders.

Doesn't leave the house without: iPod, wallet (yes, wallet, not purse), phone, Molskine, sketching pens.

Favourite possessions: flat-cap, coffee gear, DSLR (Nikon D60... she's saving for a better lens), turntable and amp, bicycle (doesn&'t actually use it much, but takes a quiet pride in how crap it is), DS-Lite.

Musical tastes: Jazz, Funk, Electro, Blues and Roots, Reggae, SKA, Indie-pop, some old rock, minimalist trance, live gigs, local music... she has an annoying tendency to always know one band or another that is so cool you've never heard of them.

Blogs: Core77, The Australian Cool Hunter, Apartment Therapy, Life Hacker, ffffound, Who the Bloody Hell Are They.

Other media: Life, Firefly, Gruen Transfer, Life on Mars (BBC version), Iron Chef, Deadpool, Sci-fi books, British comedy. Has seen some anime (major stuff: Bebop, GitS, Akira, etc) not a huge fan though.

Yeah, there's been a few changes to Jesse. The most obvious is that she's changed from Graphic to Industrial Design, that's simply because I know more about ID shinannigans than I do Graphic. Somewhere along the way she also picked up the little finger biting idiosyncracy which I guess means she's either trying to stifle a laught, or isn't 100% in control of herself (shocked, thinking, etc.).
